The History
Historic Chapel
Our church was first organized in 1823, the Black Creek Methodist Episcopal Church. Members met in their homes and later in a small log schoolhouse behind the site where our historical chapel now stands. In 1847, John Scheufler deeded 2 acres to the church trustees "for and in consideration of my desire to have the gospel preached among men." It is believed the historic chapel was completed the same year. The historic chapel has wide clapboard and flush siding, with an interior of random width tongue-and-groove walls and ceiling. All lumber was hand dressed, the nails were hand wrought, and the framing uprights were mortised into sills with wooden dowels. The lumber was donated and the labor was performed mostly by slaves. The bell, still in use, was forged in New York and brought by steamboat. A wide aisle down the center of the church separated the men and women, who sat on opposite sides of the sanctuary. The 2 back pews were reserved for slaves. The historic chapel was placed on the Florida Register of Historical Places in 1986, and in the National Register of Historical Places in 1990. It is used weekly for seasonal worship, weddings, Sunday school, and other meetings.

Fellowship Sanctuary
The Fellowship Sanctuary was built in the early 1980's, to serve both as a place of worship and for fellowship gatherings of the church. This building also houses the office of our Senior Pastor, Youth Pastor and office staff. With the completion of the Family Life Center in December 2004, the Fellowship Sanctuary was transformed by dedicated members of our congregation to a beautifully remodeled Sanctuary. Our first worship services were held in our worship center on January 8, 2006.

Family Life Center
From our 19th century roots, Middleburg United Methodist Church has entered the 21st century with a new Family Life Center. The facility includes a fellowship hall, which is also a regulation-sized basketball court, plus classrooms, nursery, kitchen, stage, offices and music room. Outside is a wonderful new playground for our youngest members. In 2009 and 2010, talks began with Lighthouse Christian School to create a campus based out of the Family Life Center. Now, during school weeks, the upstairs classrooms of the Family Life Center house students enrolled in the school from grades 1-12.
